I i- t ' l L m Jolinson > of Island Bay, Wellington, and at the time of his death was barely 27 years old. He left New Zealand with the Win Reinforcements nearly two years ago, and spent moat of his timo on active service in ' Fiance. He was wounded twice—once by a machine gun bullet and once by the fragment of a. shell. However, he soon recovered from the effects of these and a short space of time saw him in the firing line again, where eventually he was killed. Sergeant Johnson was a fine upstanding man, of commanding presence—a born leader 01 mcT!. As a younger man he was weil knowu in cricket, football and rowing circles, indeed, in the last named he was looked upon as % coming man. In his private capacity Sergeant Johnson was beloved of all. He was always ready to do a man a good turn, always ready to lend a helping hand. There was no Diumbug about him. He said what he meant and meant what he said. Like all great souls he was strong as a lion, yet gentle as a woman, and all with whorn he came into contact were the bettftf for having known him.
