MIDHIRST. (From Our Own Correspondent.A striking proof that Midhirst is the centre of a splendid tract of dairying country is demonstrated by the fact that a new cheese factory erected by the proprietor, Mr W. J. Neilson, at the corner of the Denbigh and Mountain road?, will shortly be opened. The building, w'hjch is admirably planned to suit the site and for convenient working', consists of a covered receiving stand facing the Mountain road, backed by a commodious making room, 40ft. x 30ft.. in the rear of which, on the south side, is an insulated and well ventilated curing room 30ft, x 24ft. with an engine room 30ft.. x 14ft. on the north side, in which is installed a 12 h.p. Luke boiler and a 7 h.p. De Murray engine. The floors throughout are of concrete with cement finish, and the walls reinforced concrete, finished internally with plaster, and externally with rough cast and cement pipes. The roof, which is close boarded, is covered with patent roofing. The factory has been erected from the plans and under the supervision of Mr Neilson. the actual time occupied by building operations being only six weeks. The timber and joinery were supplied by Messrs \\. Svmes and Son, Rawera, cement and eronoline Messrs Bellringer and Co., Stratford, piping and fittings Messrs McMullan and Frederie, Stratford, and the iron work connected with roof principals by Mr G. Smith, Stratford. The factory was recently visited | by the chief dairy commissioner and one ' of the Taranaki dairy experts, who were well satisfied and expressed their opinion the site was equal to any iri New Zealand, and that, the building, when completed, would be a credit to the dairy industry. The actual date of opening depends' on the arrival from Auckland of the vats, which have been manufactuied by Messrs Haril/ey and Hardley. Mr Neilson was advised last week they 'had been shipped, but, owing to the celebration of victories, their delivery has been somewhat delayed. The news of the armistice with Austria was received here at about noon and celebrated by ringing the Church hells and benzine tin music. The school children paraded and were regaled, with ;i plentiful supply of "buckshee soft drinks, lollies and nuts.
