BIG BLAZE AT WELLINGTON. TIMBER YARDS SUFFER GREATLY. By Telegraph.—Pres3 Association. Wellington. Last Night. A fire broke out in a timber yard at Taranaki street to-nig : ht, and destroyed a great quantity of building material. It is believed to have started at the Wellington Cooperage and Box Company's yard The timber was chiefly white pine which was destroyed, also a big two storey iron factory full of machinery. A two storey brick, factory, occupied by the same company, was completely gutted. The Millars West Australian Hardwoods Company lost pratically all' their stocks of timber,, also a workshop, but the office was saved. The stock of tilii* her in C. Slymons' yard, and a large rack of mouldings was also completely destroyed

The great feature of the fire was the saving of Jessie street from destruction. It is a narrow thoroughfare, lined on each side 'with two storey wooden houses. The brigade made a splendid fight, and after two hours hard work, the danger to Jessie street was averted. About thirty or forty houses, meanwhile, had been stripped of furniture, and the Mayor placed the Town Hall at the services of those whose homes were dismantled. No estimate can be given at present of the losses, hut they must amount to many thousands. • DAMAGE AT HASTINGS. Hastings, Nov. fi. It is now ascertained that the damage done to stocks 'by Tuesday's fire is I-leretnunga Street exceeds £SOOO, Hyde and Ilinde being the principal sufferer?!. Complete insurances are: —On the stock —Hyde,: £SOO in various offices; Hasnah and Co. (not the Wilson Boot Company, as telegraphed yesterday), £2300 is the New Zealand; W. Hinde, £405 in the Australian Alliance; G Wolf, £IOO in the Alliance. On the buildings— Hyde's and Hinde's. premises, £llOO in the Phoenix; Armstrong's and Efannaii's, £SOO in the same office- Both buildings were owned by Knight Bros., of Dannevirke. The occupiers estimate the stock and plant values at: Hyde,: £2500 (nothing saved); Armstrong,, £4009 (partially destroyed); Hannah and Co., £->OOO (mainly damage by smoke and water): Wolf, £2OO (nothing saved); Tlindo, £BOO (nothing saved). DAIRY FACTORY BURNED Invercargill, Nov. 0. The Dominion Dairy Factory at Winton was completely destroyed by fire last night. Tho manager said he had left or>ly a. few minutes when first notified that a fire had started in the roof near the engine- A gale Was blowing, and tho structure, with its contents, was quickly demolished. Both were insured.
