THE MAORI DELAYED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Friday. Tho Maori's departure for Lyttelton was delayed by the shortage or firemen. Later sufficient men were secured and the vessel will sail at daylight. A RETURNED SOLDIER'S DEATH. Wellington, Friday. Sergeant James Saimderson, a returned soldier, and a member of tho guard on Somes Island, was found shot dead this morning in tho guard room, with a service revolver in one hand. Deceased left a note bidding farewell to Major Matheson and staff. He was a single man, about 50 years of age. TRENTHAM CANTEEN.
Wellington, Nov. 2. As from yesterday the Trentham canteens liave been placed, under the administration of the military authorities. All profits are paid into the canteen funds and are retutitablc to the men through the respective units. Prices aro on a par with and, m some cases, lower than pre-war rates. Civilians are strictly debarred from participating in t'he benefits of the system, Which is designed purely for soldiers. A similar scheme had been in operation at Featherston Camp for some time. THE MORTGAGE TAX. Wellington, Nov. 2. Replying to the request of tho deputation from tho New Zealand Farmers' Union for the removal of the mortgage tax, Sir -Jose])!]. Ward said that if he agreed to such ft suggestion he would be obliged to impose an export tax, to which he was opposed. At the end of tho war the Dominion would probably owe 200 millions in addition to her ordinary indebtedness. When the war was over the Dominion would be probably the lowest taxed portion of the j Empire, and possibly the strongest fii nancially. EMBARGO ON FLAX Wellington, Nov. 2. A deputation of flaxniill owners requested Mr Masscy to endeavor to remove the United States embargo on flax, as space in flax vessels to Britain was restricted. America's attitude was a serious disadvantage. Mr. Massey replied that he was in communication with t'ae British Ambassador in Washington.
