Now that Turkey has been decently interred, punters will turn with joyous hearts to the digestion of other "dead birds," this time at the New Zealand Cup meeting, which, as any up-to-date policeman will tell you, opens at Riccarton to-day. The Cup has attracted It) horses, and the field is the strongest that has been lined up for years. Client, Menelmis, and Sasanof make up a brilliant trio of tried stayers, and the liest of the three will take a lot of beating. Sasanof has been backed for a heap of money, but on recent form both Client and Menelaus should beat him, Menclaus stays well, but at a difference of only 41b the ■well-performed Client appears to have it on him. Margerine does not look attractive with 8.2, and Volo 7.13 reads much better. Snub is getting up in years, and Rorke's Drift never liked a two-milo journey. Cynic h.as been slightly under a cloud lately, but would have a chance if landed at the post fit and well. Devotion has a nice, handy weight, and the same can be said of Mascot. Detroit' does not strike ouo as dassy enough for a New Zealand Cup, and Rose Pink 6.11, Kilrush 6.7, and Battle Song should beat him. Client, of the top-weights; Volo, of the "middles"; and 'Kilrush, of the light-weights, may be going strongest at the finish, The race has never been won with more than 8.9, but much bigger weights have been carried into a plat<-. and possibly 'Client may be the one xo hoist a new weight-carrying record. The Stewards' Handicap has drawn 21 smart sprinters, including Parisian Diamond, Wrestler, 80-Peep, an 3 Micliaela. Possibly Parisian Diamond will start favorite, but Wrestler has only to run straight to give the top-weights all they require and a little bit over. The Welcome Stakes will see a brilliant crowd of two-year-olds in actionErmine, on Trentham form, reads well, but C'renides and Royal Stag can also travel very fast. If Devotion is reserved for the Riccarton Welter, she -will start a very warm order. In her absence, Glendower may carry the bulk of the investments.
Down South the dogs are barking Vascular for tho Spring Hurdles, but what, is wrong with Vacuum. Fixed penalties have rather spoiled the Linwood Handicap, and Oratress and Sleepy Head may hold recent winners safe at the weights. Bronk Delaval 'and Depredation wero the only ones to drop out of the New Zealand Cup on Friday, while the pen was put through the names of Torfreda, Sweet Tipperary, Hyttus, Lionskin, Pennon. Oratress, Braid, and Onslaught for the Stewards' Handicap. The Melbourne Cup will he run tomorrow. Amongst the acceptors are: Desert Cold 9.G, Estland 9.0, Bee ,7-13, Finmark 7.7, Arch Marella 7.3, Kilflinn 7.:?, Kill 'Km 0.13, and Killeen ti.l3. Tho Avondale meeting will be concluded on Wednesday.
