ALLIES' FLEET THROUGH DARDANELLES., BRITISH OCCUPY CONSTANTINOPLE. TURKISH ARMIES ON TIGRIS SURRENDER. New York, Oct. 31. Turkey Vis surrendered unconditionally. London, Oct. 31. Britain Ihas officially received Turkey's proposals, which are tantamount to unconditional surrender.—Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoc. The armistice with Turkey operated from noon to-day. The Allied fleet passed the Dardanelles at sis.o'clock this morning.—Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoc. It 13 asserted that the Turkish capitulation provides that the armies shall lay down their arms, the British fleet shall occupy Constantinople, and that the prisoners be. released forthwith. In the House of Commons, Mr. Cave announced that the armistice operated from noon to-day. It provided for a free passage for the fleet to the Bosphorus and Black Sea and the occupation of the port?, thereon, and Hue repatriation of Allied prisoners. General Townsend has already been released. The Turkish armies have surrendered on the Tigris front.—Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoe. Washington, Oct. 31. Mr. Lansing has notified Turkey that the United States is bringing its armistice request to the attention of the Allies. A later report states that the Turkish armistice will be effective immediately. Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoc. OFFICIAL CONFIRMATION. GENERAL TOWNSEND ACTS AS GO-BETWEEN. Wellington, Nov. 1 Tihe following cablegram has been received by the Governor-General from the Secretary of State for the Colonies:— "Some day 3 ago General Townsend was liberated in order to inform the British Admiral in command in the Aegean that the Government of Turkey (.sked that negotiations might be opened immediately for an armistice. "The reply was sent that if the Government of Turkey sent fully accredited plenipotentiaries to Vice-Admiral Calthorpe, he was empowered to inform them of the conditions on which the Allies would agree to the cessation of hostilities and to sign an armistice on those conditions on their behalf. "A Turkish plenipotentiary arrived at Mudros early this week, and the armistice was signed by Admiral Calthorpe on behalf of the Allied Governments on the night of October 30, and comes into operation at noon on October 31. "It is not possible yet to publish the full terms of tSie armistice. It- includes the free passage of the Allied fleets through the Bosphorus to the Black Sea, the aceupation of the forts on the Dardanelles and Bosphorus necessary to secure their passage, and the immediate repatriation of Allied prisoners of war. "An announcement in these terms will be made in both Houses of Parliament this afternoon.—(Signed) Long.'? Received Nor. 1, 7.45 p.m. London, Oct. 31. In the House of Commons, Sir George Cave said General Townsend was liberated some days ago in order to inform the British Admiral in the Aegean that the Turkish Government desired to negotiate for an armistice. The Entente requested Turkey to send plenipotentiaries to Admiral CaMhorpe, who would give the conditions of the armistice. The Turkish plenipotentiaries. arrived in Mudross early this week.
