EXTRA BONUS TO COVER INCREASED COST OE LtVIiSHJ. By Telegraph.— Pl-ess Association. "■Wellington, Oct. 31. Owing to the greatly increased cost of living, tho Government lias been considering the question cl pay and war aonus "to officers in the Public Service, and it has been determined to place*on the Estimates tor this year a sum of £559,01)0 in addition to the ordinary seaie increases of salary to which the public servants are entitled under the classification scheme, also in addition to the existing war bonus the amount ex--1 pended in the war bonus last year in the service, amounting to ■.■e4fi:!,ooo, and I it will therefore bo seen that the total ! extra amount to be paid to public servants consequent upon, the increased cost of living due to the, war is represented by, : roughly, £1,000,000 per an- j num. ■ The additional sum of £3S!>,OOO provides for increased pay to cadets upon entering the service, an additional bonus to officers of tho Railway Department, increased pay for the Police Force, increased pay and bonuses to teachers and others in the Education Department, increased pay to the Prisons Department, special promotion in the service recommended by the Commissioners, and additional war bonnes throughout the rest of the service. These extra emoluments will- be granted to the lower-paid officials in the service, and it is hoped tho increased pay and bonuses referred to will have the effect of relieving the civil servants of the difficulties which they have recently experienced owing to the greatly increased cost of living due to the war. '
