DISTRICT NEWS.

[ . ♦ ——-. HURFORD ROAD, (From a Correspondent.)' A very successful and enjoyable social, inaugurated by the Hurford and Plieney Road Sewing Guild was held in the schoolroom on Tuesday evening, Then tlhe handsome sum of £lO Ga was gathered to carry on the work of the Guild. Although recently formed and few in number, these ladies have, with willing and bu3y lingers, done a coneiderable amount of work already, and (he money raised on Tuesday evening will enable- them to carry on again for some time. Brave mothers and wives, some with lads "gone west," have set (heir back 3 to tlhe wall determined to lielp their dear ones win through, and it is to be hoped any future effort will meet with the success this worthy cause deserves. Despite unfavorable weather conditions quite a goodly number cama along—and those who tripped the "light fantastic," not being uncomfortably crowded, liiad an enjoyable time. Dance music was gratuitously supplied by Mrs Revel], while extras were played by Misses Taylor and Loveridge. Mr Williams, our popular M.C., kept things moving merrily, and songs, rendered by Miss Taylor and Mr Lichbon, received a well-deserved encore. A number. of useful articles, donated by members of the Guild, found ready buyers, and considerably augmented the funds. The articles were 51bs tea, given by Mrs-H. Loveridge; cake, Mrs Vickers; box sweets, Mesdames Kidd and Swanwick; Wall plaque, Mrs Balsom;, and, a very landsome camisole, named by Mr liams (who is pardonably bashful), a "blesmesole," was worked arid-present-ed by Mrs Prujean. Altogether-a rery, pleasant and profitable time was spent, and we hope there will be many more" such. The president of the Guild (Mrs Spcnce) was unavoidably - absent i Uhrough illness, and regrets and. apolo-) o-jes were expressed by Mr Wiiliams.
