A French comtnitnique states: There | was fierce fighting on tlie east bank of the Oise opposite Verlyde-Grand, where tlie enemy launched several counter-at-tacks. Further south the French pushed their lines as far as the approaches to the Oise, capturing strong points northwest of Guise AVe aUo made progress east of Pcron and in the region north-east of Pargny Wood. The French are now in contact with the whole of the new enemy line between the Oise and the Serre. Sir 'Douglas Haig reports: There have been artillery activities and patrol encounters on different parts of tha front. An American communique states: On the Verdun front operations were marked by heavy artillery fire. An enemy counter-attack on Bclleu Wood was repulsed. French aviation observers re. port numerous fire in tlie Aisne Valley and also in the valley of the Serre.
