CHARGE OF FALSE PRETENCES.
MAN AND HIS WIFE W COURT, By Telegraph.—Press Assockition. Christchurch, Oet. 29. Arthur Patrick McGuire and Janet Mary McUuire, his wife, were each charged, in the Magistrate's Court today, before Mr. McCarthy, S.M., with obtaining £194 4s, from May, 1917, to August, 1918, from William Joan Cupples by false pretences. The male accused had previously been twice remanded on this charge, originally from Dunedin, it being there alleged that Ire "had obtained the money by representing it was being used to obtain the release of a Miss Hines from a convent. Detective Mcllveny applied for a remand for a week. Mr. \V. J. Hunter, for the accused, stated that the woman was in a delicate condition, and ho asked for nominal bail. The Chief Detective: They might leave. I understand that McCuire was endeavoring to leave the country, when restedThe Magistrate: How can anyone leave the country without a permit? : Accused was remanded for a week, bail being granted, the female' accused in her own recognisances, and for McGuire in two sureties of £SO each and his own Surety of £IOO.
