WHANGAMOMONA.

(Our Special Reporter.) October 30. The- second sale in the saleyards recently erected by the settiers'at Whangamomona was held on Wednesday bv Mr. Xcwtoli King and the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, iu conjunction. The weather has been very bad for mustering during the past, few days, and some of the roads leading to here—tiie Mangave, Marco, and Wanngamomona—are in a very bad state. There was a good yarding of both sheep and cattle, all the pens being full. The auctioneers (Messrs R. Cottier and \V. H. Young) had a busy time. Trice-?, on the whole, were good, a line of four-year-old bullocks realising £l4 and hosrgets 2fis to -235. The road from Stratford to Whangamomonr. is in very fair condition, save for one or two bad places on each of the saddles. Several ears yesterday made t'ne trip in and out, taking from -2'/ t to 2 1 /; hours each way. Quite a contrast with a few years ago, when a journey from .Stratford to YYliangamomona was I something to be dreaded. Private J. Rooncy, of Messrs Rooney I and Co., the well-known local storekeepers, has just returned from tbo front, having been invalided home after nearly two years' active service. A well-respected resident of the district, Mr. Eugene O'Farrel, a blacksmith in the employ of the Public Works here for many years, was found dead on the bank of the river just past the township on Tuesday afternoon. Deceased, who suffered from heart trouble, was at the township on Monday, and left about fli'-k on foot to p-ccecd home. When just past the second bridge he was ev!(lenily taken with heart seizure and fell, rolling from the road almost to the water's edge, where his body was found next afternoon by a passer-by. Deceased, who, as far as is known, had no relatives in Xw Zealand, was about fin years of age. An inquest was held fin Wednesday before Mr. K. Hill, T.P. act-ing-coroner, when a verdict of death from natural causes was returned. Xotification has been received from the Minister for Public Works that the sum of £450 has been granted to metal Pleasant Terrace as far as the saleyards. Tliis is compensation for the metal road taken by the Public Works Department when putting the road through. Signs of progress in the district are manifest despite war conditions. On the Whangamomona Road, close to the township, the new Sunday School Rail that is being erected by the Presbyterians is approaching completion and is to lx> opened early next month. The building, which is to be utilised by tha as a church, will also be available for t!iie Anglicans. It is a very neat building, well lighted and ventilated. Tt was designed by Mr. Arthur (Stratford), and has been built by Messrs T. Smith (Auckland) and If. Rarratt. For some time past the Rev. Xorrie has been collecting a fund for the purpose by subscriptions and the proceeds of shows, etc., and it is expected that wiien the buildinc is opened there will only be a debt of £IOO, wihich it is hoped to liquidate in a year or two. Tt is understood that the Roman Catholics intend erecting a church shortly nn a section near by. Mr. A. Milne, general manager of the Taranaki Farmers' iie.it. Company, was a visitor to the district on sale day.
