A SEDITIOUS ADVERTISEMENT. By Telegraph. —Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. At the Magistrate's Court, David (iriffin and John Charles Troy were- charged with publishing in an advertisement in New Zealand Truth a seditious utterance, in the words. "We presume you are now aware that both the above-named Irishmen have been sentenced to 11 months' hard, labor for publishing articles dealing with Ireland." -Mr. Macassey, for the Crown, referred to the prosecution of O'Regan and Cummins -in Dulled iri respecting an article in the Green Ray. and said the advertisement, referred to the article, and he contended applauded it. Sir .T. Findlay. for the defence, said the advertisement was a genuine appeal for funds for the maintenance of the wife and children of Cummins, and did no more than explain why the men were punished. Th" Magistrate (Mr. Eraser) said that whether the words were used intentionally or not, the tendency was seditious, and for that reason he wa-s bound to enter a conviction, but he did not intend to impose a heavy penalty. Each defendant was fined £5. AN ANTI-EXPLOITATION RESOLUTION. " ' Dunedin, Last Night A conference of local bodies this morning nassed a resolution urging the Government to take immediate action to pass such legislation as will prevent unfair exploitation of the people of the Dominion.
