A splendid record of family service and sacrifice was disclosed by the evidence of Mr W. Brown, of Kauaeranga, who appealed to tlie Native Military Service Board at Te Kuiti last week, for the exemption of I two employees, who' are experts in bleeding kauri trees for their gum. Mr Brown, who has a' lange contract with the Kauri Timber' Company, stated that it took at least two years to train men to bleed trees. Hia five sons, lie said, had all enlisted, three had been killed —one in Palestine and two in France—one (had : been invalided home, and was incapable of work, while the fifth was still on active service. Mr Brown said that his younger brother also had been killed in action. The board, after complimentinir Mr Brown warmly on his family's splendid example, declared that the circumstances fully warranted any reasonable concession, and the appeals for both employees were adjourned sine die, on condition that they remained in their, present employment.
