POLITICAL NOTES.
THE-OPENING OP THE SESSION.

Wellington, Last Night.
To-day'.s proceedings in Parliament were briefly formal. Alter the Governor had made his speech, the Legislative Council met for a few minutes.
Kir Francis Bell gave notice of the election of Speaker, in place of the late Sir Charles Johnston. Jt is considered certain that the Hon. W. C- F. Carncroas, Acting-Speaker, will be appointed. The House sat for half an hour, while members poured out a flood of notices of questionsMany private Bills, including such familiar ones as Mr. Sidey's Daylight Saving Bill, were announced. The notices of questions covered a wide range. Members want to know all about wheat, meat, wool, recruiting, sickness on transports, liquor, soldiers' allowances, civil servants' pay, the prohibition movement, and a dozen other things. Mr. Harris wants a day to discuss the Defence report. Mr. Vigor Brown wants more Germans interned, Br. Thacker wants to know if it is time that Ministers, while in London, arranged to secure a title for the Hon- A. M. Myers. Mr. Holland asks for information about the Wangunui Detention Barracks. When the questions were exhausted, Mr. Massey said a few appropriate words regarding the new chamber, in which he hoped justice was going to be done and the progress'of the nation promoted. There was some interest in the swear-ine-in of the official Labor members, Messrs Holland and Eraser, who took the oath of allegiance to the King in the usual form.
The House then adjourned till tomorrow.
