PIERROTS' FANCY DRESS BALL.

A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. The plain and fancy dress ball held last night at the Coronation Hall, in connection with the New Plymouth Pierrots' patriotic effort, was an unqualified success, both from the point of view of spectacular effort and the financial result. The organiser (Mr.. J Hoskin) and the committee which carried out his schemes are to be. congratulated on the result of their efforts and deserve the best thanks of all concerned. The hall was brilliantly decorated. Suspended from the roof in the centre of the building was a huge multi-colored umbrella, from which hung a large number of Chinese lanterns. There was an abundance of bunting, and flags of many varieties were hung all round the building and festooned across from wall to wall, and with the lanterns and lights amongst them produced a very pleasing effect. The floor was in good order, and a throughly enjoyable evening was spent. There was an attendance of about 500.' The Mayor (Mr. C. H. Burgess) briefly opened the proceedings, and the Grand March was led by John Bull (Miss Branley) and Britannia (Miss Mead). The music for the dancing was provided, up to the supper adjournment, bv the Citizens' Band, and thereafter by Mrs. George's orchestra. The Ball Committee, consisting of the following gentlemen, carried out the duties of M.'sO.:— Messrs E. Paul, J. Abbott, J. Kenny, H. Mace, R. Parkin, and J. Hoskin. Mr! E. Paul acted as secretary of the committee, and carried out the duties most successfully.

The supper arrangements.were in the hands of Mrs. Burgess and the Women's Patriotic Committee, which was a guarantee of the success of that part, of the function. The first annexe was transformed into a supper room, the walls being decorated with large punga ferns, which were arranged by Messrs C. Sadler and R. Bennock. The tables were very tastefully arranged, the decorations being carried out by Mesdames Scanloh, Collins, and Eberlet. The." whole of the supper provisions were voluntarily donated. Valuable assistance was given m this connection by Mesdames McKenzie, Bennock, Bullot, and Drury. A soft drinks stall was managed by~Mr L Clarke.

There was a good number of fancy tuinos on the floor (mostly of national representation), and, of course, the Pierrots tbemselves were much in evidence. The competition classes did not draw a great number of entries, but the costumes were all distinctly good, and the awards of the judge (Mrs. Jefcoate, Wanganui) gave general satisfaction. The following won the decisions:— Best-dressed lady, representing either England Scotland, Ireland or WalesMiss Falwasser (Scotland).

Best-dressed lady, representing any of the British Dominions—Miss Falwasser (Maori).

Best-dressed lady, representing any of the Allied countries—Miss Moon (America)'.

Best-dressed lady, wearing patriotic dress other than those above statedMiss Bennoeh (Billiards). Best-dressed gentleman, wearing a patriotic dress—Mr. Gaylard (Maori). Special prizes were awarded to the following:—Mrs. Boy Parkin, as "Pierette" (donated by Mrs. Brookman); Mrs. W. Wluttaker, "Indian Sq«aw" (Mrs Jeffcoate'): Miss Abbott, "Folly"' (Mrs Jeffcoate).
