Mr. J. Lyon, of Kaimata, has beeu elected unopposed to the vacancy on the Moa Road Board caused by the death of the late Mr. J. W. Henwood.

Mr. A. Stewart, of Stratford, has received news that his second son (Private Alfred Stewart) received gunshot wounds in the left leg, arms, and back on October 13, while on service in France. Mr. David Charteria has received word that his son, Private F, W. Charteris, 24th Reinforcements, was wounded in the chest on the 14th, and is now in hospital in France. Mr. T. H. Barriball, Fitzroy, late of Eg-mont Road, has received advice that his son, Private A. E. C. Barriball, was killed in action on October 12. Mrs. Hawes, Devon Street, has received the sad news that her son, Private George Hawes, 35th Reinforcements, has been killed in action in France. Prior to enlisting (on his 20ih birthday), Private Hawes was in the employ of Messrs. Johnston Bros. He was a keen Territorial and a popular member of the Rovers Football Club.

The Rev. J. W. Burton has been granted 18 months' leave of absence by the Methodist. Church of Australia and is proceeding to England to take charge of the \.M.C.A. relief activities at Home and abroad. His headjnarters will be the Australian Y.M.CA. headquarters, where lie will be in complete control Advice has .been received that Corporal H. D. O'Donnell was wounded in the left leg on Oetober 14, and' admittted to hospital in France. Corporal O'Donnell left New,.. Zealand with the lflth Reinforcements, and has been awarded the' Military Medal. 'He'is the eldest son of Mrs. E A. O'Donnell, Xew Plymouth, and late of Tonga'porutu.

Lieut. F. 0. treweek has cabled to his father, stating that lie was with the first troops to enter Damascus with General Allenby's cavalry. Jn a recent letter lie stated that a great reorganisation scheme was being effected of cavalry and mounted machine gun units, and the troops were in hard training in the new formation, and expected to move forward shortly. Everyone now knows what a brilliant advance that proved to be.

The Eev. W. A. Sinclair leaves for Wellington tomorrow morning, where he will represent the Methodist Church at a big mass meeting to be held in the Town Hall in the interests of the prohibition movement. Prom Wellington Mr. Sinclair goes to Masterton, and then up the Main Trunk line, where he meets church officials at several places which come within the district of which he is chairman. He then goes on to Auckland to attend the annual meeting of the Methodist Foreign Missions Committee, and expects to return to Now Plymouth at the end of next week.

Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Chapman, Waiti»ra, received tho sad news that their eldest son, Private James Walter Chapman, lias been killed in action. Private Chapman, whose wife resides in Fulforfl Street, New Plymouth, is one of the five brothers who have served with the New Zealand Forces, two having now made the supreme sacrifice. Mrs. Chapman, who has given her husband for the cause of liberty, has also three .brothers who have served their country, two having returned and one, Private" Arthur Wilev, of the local Post Office staff, is stilt on active service.
