INFLUENZA EPIDEMIC. BEACHES ALARMING PROPORTIONS Capetown, Oct. 22. A Pretoria message states that the epidemic is assuming alarming proportions. There is great distress in conntry districts. The overuse of quinine and aspirin is taking 1 toll of the Dutch population. The military are rendering energetic assitance to the civil population. At the Roberts Heights cantonments there are 18800 cases, but the value of discipline and organisation are strongly demonstrated by the low death rate as compared with that of civilians. A Johannesburg message states that during the last twelve days 1000 deaths have occurred, of which 400 were whites. At Bloemfontein the death roll is over 1000, of whom 100 were wMtes.
