WAITARA.
(From Our Own Cortspondent.) The heavy seas this week have caused a large amount of damage to the south wall of the river, the middle portion being completely undermined, but that portion now being constructed by the Harbor Board has not been affected. The Taranaki Amusements Company is holding a picture show on Monday next, the whole of the takings being handed over to the Patriotic League for providing soldiers' Christinas comforts. No deduction for xepenses will be made, and it is hoped that the public will see that there is a full house, from which the fund will benefit considerably. As a result of the heavy gale last night two of the freezing works lighters, which had been left anchored in the roadstead, were driven ashore on the south side of the Waiongona River. The lighters had fortunately been emptied of the meat, and are, as far as can now be seen, little damaged. It is expected that some time will elapse before they ean be refloated.
The band social, which should have been held last night, was postponed until next Friday, owing to the state of the weather. Owing to the short notice received of the men going into the CI camp tomorrow, no farewell social will be held, but the Mayor will hand the usual gifts to each man. a The sad news came through yesterday that Private W. Chapman had been killed in France. .Great sympathy will be felt for the wife and parents. The record of the Chapman family is something to be proud of. Five sons have served with the New Zealand Forces, two having made the supreme sacrifice, while the other son is also serving his country, doing duty as a wireless operator.
