STRATFORD
[All communications, letters, etc.. left with Mr H. J. Hopkins, bookseller, will receive prompt lUeutlon.] Stratford, Oct. 21. The usual monthly meeting of the council was held last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr. J. \V. McMillan), and Crs. McDonald, Walsh, Hunter, Jackson, Lawson, Thompson, Malone, Cameron, and Masters. *
J. Sturroek, borough engineer, Hawera, reported t'hat during the month tenders had been called for tar-macadam mixer, water-pipes, and fittings, tar tanks, etc. Tlie storage shed will be erected shortly. Levels were about to be taken to enable a true curve to be carried out in Broadway. They would have till the middle of December to get everything rea(Jy for tar-macadam work, as it would be unwise to attempt to do good work before the midsummer heat to dry the metal and keep it hot. The report was received. Councillors were pleased to see that a start had been made in Broadway south, but with the continuous wet weather naturally little progress could be made. , The Treasury, Wellington, stated that the acting-Minister of Finance considered the time inopportune for the Borough Council to raise a loan of £7OOO for additions and alterations to the borough electric light plant, and requested # that the application be deferred until after the war.—The town clerk stated 'he had written pointing out the necessity of raising the loan to permit of the work being carried out. —In the event of an unfavorable reply Being rleeived the Mayor will proceed to Wellington to interview the Minister. The manager of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company wrote stating that instructions had been given as to drying sheep skins in .a manner that will give no offence, imaginary or real, also that the cutting of a hedge encroaching on the footpath at Pembroke Road would be attended to.—Received.
A. W. Budge desired the council to defer the removal of hedge fronting Broadway until more normal times, the coat of a fegce, £OO, being prohibitive.— Consideration held over until next meet-
The Stratford A. and P. Association asked the council to grant its employees the usual whole holiday on November 28, People's Day.—Granted.
The Works Committee recommended that the creek near Mrs. Miseall's property be filled in, and that a path be formed Bft. wide and gravelled in Hamlet Street south. They did not recommend a hitching post for the Presbyterian Church.—Adopted. The Mayor bVielly announced the formation of a hydro-electric league for Taranki, and that they had honored him with the position of president, and the town clerk (Mr. Skoglund) as secretary.
Cr. Hunter expressed his approval of the scheme. As chairman of the Electric I-ishting Committee he thought the committee was entitled to a little commendation in setting the ball rolling for the formation of the league, Cr. Cameron having moved in that direction and the town clerk had attended to the details. The Mayor said he had no desire to take any kudos that might be going. The formation of the league was likely to produce beneficial results to the whole of Taranaki. and their own plant would be the better for the additional power. GENERAL.
J To-morrow (Wednesday) members of the New Plymouth Harbor Board will address ratepayers at Strathmore hall lat 2 p.m. It was intended to address the ratepayers of Whangamomona on Friday, but this meeting lias been postponed until Wednesday, October 30. The omission of two numerals in my remarks on the Copper Trail total made it appear that tfp to last week £2O had been collected, rather tlian over £2MO, as written In some quarters it is announced tliiat a Kaimata farmer is likely to come out in the Reform interest. Kaimata and Inglewood are now in the Stratford electorate.
