NO LIQUOR REFERENDUM LIKELY. By Telegraph.—Piess Association. Wellington, Yesterday. Inquiries made in • Government circles show that it is unlikely there will be a referendum on the liquor question this year, BOOT TRADE AWARD. Wellington, Yesterday. The federated boot trade award, a Dominion award, has been filed by the Arbitration Court. It gives preference to unionists, subject to certain conditions, to provide for shortage of labor during the war. The hours of work are to be from 7.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. for five days in the week, and 7 30 to 11.45 a.m. on the factory holiday The minimum wage for females is fixed at 35s per week, computed by the hour. The hot-wax machinist's wage is 4'2s 6d per week. No application for a bonus is to be mad? during the currency of the award. An ordinary week's work is to be 45 hours, overtime being time and & quarter for the first two hours, and time and a-half afterwards Female assistants are to receive 10s a week for the first year, 13s for the second, ifis for the third, 19s for the fourth, and 23b for the fifth year. In respect to male workers, the terms are practically the , same, except that the wages are to be ' not less than Is Od per hour. Provision ia made for the proportion of apprentices and their pay. The parties reached an agreement without going to the Atnitration Court. The award coincs into operation on November 8.
