DISTRICT NEWS.
LEPPERTON. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The local patriotic committee were fortunate in striking the only line day of the week, on Thursday, for their patriotic mart. Much strenuous work was done before-hand by various willing workers in arranging the various stalls, and making other necessary preparations. The hall presented a festive appearance, and considering that the function was held rather late in the spring, when our fanner folk lind it hard to get away, there was a good attendance, and the various money-mak-ing departments report good business. Various competitions were got off during tile afternoon. Following is the result of the cooking: Sponge Sandwich: Mrs Harrison Tst, Mrs I'. Sampson 2nd. Miss Hurley 3nl. Home-made Bread: Miss A. Wright Ist, Mrs Copestake 2nd, Mrs K. H. Hellier ttrd. .lain Tarts: Mrs Dick Ist. Mrs Phelun 2nd. Mrs .1. .fenkinson *!rd. Sausage Rolls: Mrs .1. .lenkinson tst, Miss Stewart '2nd. Mrs H. Proceedings during the afternoon were enlivened by Mrs Movcrlev'a orchestra, whose programme of items was very much appreciated indeed. Tn the evening, the hall was densely packed for the concert given by a company of our Xew Plymouth friends. The following is the programme: Piano solo, "Yalse Caprice," Miss I-lirs't; recitation, "Trip To The Country," Miss Bedford} song, "Huslieea,"
Miss Morrison; song and chorus, ''Pack Up Your Troubles," Miss Palmer and Co.; song. "Till The Sands Of The Desert Grow Cold,'' Sergt.-Major fiill; song, "Mountain Lovers," Mrs Wilkes; song, "Lorree," Sergt.-Major Gill. All these items were entered. The concert concluded with a i'urcc, "Only A Hoax," which . caused great merriment. Accompanist, Jliss Hirst, Consideration for your space causes me to omit mention of the various stall holders, of the afternoon tea department, and sundry other details. The committee wish to express appreciation of the way one and all attended to their various duties. (Sickness has been rife in the district lately, especially on Corbett road, where there are illnesses in several homes. Two patients, Misses E. Cartwright and H. Copestakc, had to be removed to the hospital and undergo operations. I understand t'iie condition of both is satisfactory.
