(From Our Own Correspondent.) Eltham, Oct. 21. Captain R. J. Carter is at present on holiday leave from Samoa, The last time the writer saw the genial captain was on the morning Antwerp had fallen, and it was shortly nftei this that Captain Carter sailed for Samoa, where he lias been ever since engaged with the Expeditionary Forces, His journey to New Zealand was hardly a matter of pleasure, seeing that he had some 'German prisoners under his control. The exceptionally warm temperature of the Tropics has left its mark on tho old Rifles' captain, who, nevertheless, says be is feeling fit.
During his stay at the islands he ran across Mr. George Hardy, well known in Eltham, but of late years a resident of Sydney. He found "George" looking particularly well and anxious to know how Eltham was faring. Mangatoki people last week farewelled Joe Carlson. This is his second visit to £he firing line. He returned some month'? hack, and, finding the married men being called up, feels it his duty as a single man to go forward again.
