STRATFORD.
{All communications, letters,' etc., left with Mr H J. Hopkins, bookseller, will receive prompt attention.] (From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Oct- 21. j;i:i) cross appeal. Although tlis actual results o* the Copper Trail competition oil bel'alf of the Rod Cross appeal will uot be known for a feu Jays, it is safe to say that the subscriptions are highly satisfactory. It i? some weeks since the preliminary meetings were held, and although tr some tile efforts of the promoters may have appeared somewhat slow, it cv.unot he said they were lacking in system or the public in sympathy. From time to time in these columns the various amounts forwarded by the country settlers indicated that ihe mail on the land was prepared to do his best, and it was soon apparent that i;i ihe Coiiocr Trail competition, the wealth of the district would swamp the efforts of the town. Early last week the donations and promises from the district showed well over £'2o, and there were other districts to come in. Regarding the town, it was generally recognised that tliey could not compete with their opponents, but, despite this, it will be found that" the amount secured will compare very favorably with other quarters. The farmers, it must be said, have not been niggardly. The appeal was made at the worst time of the year, when, in some cases, factories had not paid out their bonuses, and farmers were, in some instances, pushed for cash. Again, the weather having been so vile and the mortality amongst stock so heavy that at times those responsible for collecting would find a farmer busy burying a fine beast or else hard at work assisting stock out of a creek or water-bole. But the men on the land made light of their losses, and promptly paid up for the Red Cross apnea!. The Ladies' Patriotic Committee have every reason to feel satisfied with support of the, ireneral public, and the president (Mrs. -T. W. Boon| and her assistants fully appreciate the efforts of Messrs Cooper and A. D. Stanley, secretaries of the competition, and others wiio during the period the trail was worked have given valuable aid. ' Tile organiser (Mr J. S. Rowe) deserve; especial commendation. It was no light task lie undertook in supervising details, and he well merits the generous terms of satisfaction bestowed unoii his efforts. The appeal, as far as actual collection is concerned, y now a tiling of the past, is ocncerned, is now a thing of the past, but as an example to other parts of Taranaki it may be safely said that Stratford has done well and nobly. All books, etc.. are to be returned on Wednesday. so by Saturday an approximate icpult should he known. Stratford Borough Council meeting tonight. Some interesting police business will eventuate at the next sitting of the S.M. Court here. It is rather peculiar that Toko should suffer severely from heavy hailstorms on Saturday and Stratford miss the bombardment. At Toko the fall was exceptionally heavy. Cold, driving rain, and with half a gale blowing, do not. spell summer weather.
At Tea Rooms on Saturday (Mesdamps Boon ami flood) £l3 is na? taken, and at the Shop (Mesdames TTnincke ami Robinson) £23 14s Od.
