RED CROSS "OUR DAY."
I SATURDAY'S BIG EFFORT, Saturday marked the closing effort iu connection with the "Our l)ay" appeal iu. New Plymouth, on behalf of tlie Red Cross and the Copper Trail collections. The Mart, which was Very heavily stocked, was under the supervision of a special committee of ladies, with Mrs. Hugh Baily at their head, while others workers supervised stalls set up in the streets for the sale of fruit, Dowers, produce, vegetables, sweets, and fancy goods- The Women's Patriotic Committee also opened their shop in Currla Street on behalf of the "Our Day" fund. In Devon Street there were many young lady assistants (the sign "of the Rett Cross being conspicuous on them all) selling buttonholes and badges, and collecting donations. In , addition, a house-to-house canvass with collectingboxes was made by a number of young ladies over the greater part of the borough. areft. This was very expeditiously carried out, and with very good results, and before midday other helpers were busily engaged at the Red Cross rooms counting the contents of the col-lecting-boxes. The weather was not conducive to a good day's, street collecting, but notwithstanding the very showery conditions, the sum of nearly £SOO was gathered in that way. The Mart takings, without any raffles or competitions, amounted to £223, which may still be slightly increased. The committee responsible for carrying out the different sections of the work and approximate individual takings were as follow: — Sweets and Fancy Stall: Misses Poto, Chong, Cholmondeley, and Meston, £22 9s 2d,
Cakes and Pastry: Morning, Mesdames E 1\ Webster, Arthur Avery, and Matthems, £lO 7s 2d; afternoon, Mrs. S. \V. Shaw and Miss Wade, £3 10s lOd. Vegetables: Mesdames Gibson and Monteath, £lO 8s 4d. £8 OS 4d. . ; ... The two concerts given in town on behalf of the fund returned about £144, that arranged by Mrs. Hugh. Baily some weeks ago netting £llO, and Miss Lcatham. given last week, £34. Other efforts of a kindred aature, winch have been arranged in several of the outlving districts, have yet to be accounted for, and it is anticipated these will produce a considerable sum, though the returns from them are not expected to be available for several days yet.
