LIBEL ACTION. AGAINST DR. TfIAQKETV ,Uy Telegraph.—Press Association, Wellington, Oct. IS. In tue Supreme Court Id Chambers, Mr. Justice Chapman dealt with a phase of the action for damages for * libel ■brought by Lieutenant A. H. Giierson against Dr. Thacker, M.l\ The interrogations whicn plaintiff sought to make were in effect:—(Did Dr. Thackcr, on February 27, 191S, m the. Town Hall, Wellington, make use of words which stated or implied that Grierson was an arrant German spy, and that scarcely had he got to the front when he went over to tho enemy? The Judge said the alleged words were uttered about a man who was absent from the country at the time, and he had to resort to this means of obtaining preliminary information. If it turned out to be the fact that the words were used, it was admitted that it would save plaintiff a great deal of cost, and trouble in proving his case. That was the main object of the interrogations. The order would be made. the answers to be given within 10 davs. RAILWAY RETURNS. Wellington, Oct. IS. The railway revenue for the September period was:—North Island, £204,928; South Island, £145.533: total. £350,557.
The expenditure was:—North Island, £135,005; South Island, £111,420. Revenue for six months aggregated £2.2-23,092, compared witli £1,945,582 last vear, and the expenditure amounted to £1,472,530, asuiast £1,278,421 a year ago. The percentage of revenue expended during the past six months was GG.27, against R5.76 last year. WORKSHOPS TOR SOLDIERS. Wellington, Oct. 13. . Tenders have been accepted 'by the Government far the erection of four workshops for soldiers under treatment at Rotoraa. Tho first building will have accommodation and fittings for electrical work, eaddlery, splint-making, and handicraft. Tho sacond will have provision for boatwaking, tailoring, cigarette-making, hairdressing, plastercast making, and a photography studio. 1 The third will contain carpentry and basket-making shops.
