HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS.

SOME GOOD PERFORMANCES. The annual steeplechase has always been a popular feature of the sports in connection with the Boys' High School, and the events run yesterday will tend to further increase its popularity. This year two innovations were made, the venue being changed to the Waiwajcaiho golf links, and it proved most suitable for the purpose, spectators having a view of a considerable portion of the race. Another innovation was dividing, the competition into two sections, one for the juniors under 14 and the other open. Both competitions evoked keen contests and great enthusiasm on the (part of the pupils. Though the course in each case was a difficult' one, the majority completed it. The course for the junior competition was about 2 miles 600 yards, and there were about 00 competitors. The limit boys had three minutes' start, and the final lay between three of them. K. Foqkes, a small boy of nine years, won by a, narroyf margin from K. Fox (Okato), with. J. Cornish j (Opunake) third. Fifty boys finished, there being less than five minutes between first and last. They were heartily cheered for their performance. The fastest time was put up by D. Ma,ckie (scratch), who covered the distance in 13min. 53sec.

The senior competition drew 180 competitors, the limit lads having five minutes', start. The distance was <% miles, and, save for about half a mile along the sand, the lads were in sight, all tlhe way. It was a good test of endurance, part of the journey, as was the case with the juniors also, being against a strong wind. The race was a pretty one, the field being well strung out. When they came into sight from the beach, K. Allen and Dixon were in front, and they kept together till near thh end, when the latter was unlucky enough to fall over a sheep and suffered defeat by 10 seconds. Tho rest of the field followed in quick succession, some 140 finished, and there was less than 8 minutes between the first and last boy home. The fastest time was put up by. B. goon from scratch—24mia. Bsec.

The organisation of the sports was good. Mr. A. R. Ryder lhad charge of the sports, Mr. Moyes waa starter, and Mr. N. Day timekeeper, E. H. Rockell, H. Glover, 0. G. Bottrill, and C. A.
