i HAWEKA SITTINGS. The First Wellington Military Service Board resumed its sittings in Hawera on Monday. Arthur Edward Parkes, carrier, Opunake, applied for leave for Archibald hilward McDonald, motor lorry driver, Hawera, who was granted leave until the February draft. Edith Mary Pratt, Stratford, applied for the return of her husband. James William Pratt, who was on active service with tho 41st. Reinforcements. The grounds of appeal were those of hardship. The Board considered that the grounds of the appeal were not sufficient to make any recommendation. Alfred Charles Walker, dairy fanner, Otakehd, was granted leave until the February draft. The appeal of Percy Moncrieth Glen- . nie, railway porter, Inglewood, was dismissed, there being no appearance of Übe appellant. The appeal of Martin Thomas Gilll■gan, farm assistant, Patea, which was previously before the Eoard, was reheard. Decision was reserved sine die. { Frederick Cleaver, farmer, Te Roti, [(Mr H. L. The appeal of Joseph Samuel Watt, W'rakamara (Mr Taylor), adjourned until the January sitting. Mr Powell appeared for Frederick Jewell, farmer, Normanby, whose appeal was reheard. Appellant was a, married man with one child. He was previously class'd C2, but was now boarded CI. He had applied for reexamination. i Tiie case was adjourned to Friday. Michael Kennedy, farmer, appealed for John Bourke, farmer, Waverley, who was managing two farms of 750 acres an 140 acres respectively for the Bourke estate. Witness attended to the finan- i cial side of the business, and appellant the practical, including the buying and selling. Witness was co-trustee of- the estate, with Jaines Bourke,. who- was 1 onactive service. Decision was reserved. David Campbell, farmer, Hawera,- a single man, previously classed C2, now' classed 01, appealed on' the ground of public interest. Appellant stated that he was milking K. r > cow-9 by machine. I Frederick William Askew," farmer, Alidhirst, deposed that lie was occupying a farm of 61 acres freehold and 53 acres leasehold. He desired time until April. Decision was reserved. The Board gave its reserved decisions m the following cases: P. Cleaver (Te Roti), leave until tho February draft; J. Bourke (Waverloy), adjourned until me December sitting. The Board gave its reserved decisions on Tuesday in the following cases: David Camubell, Pilwma, leave until the November CI draft; John William Gibba, Midhirst, decision reserved sine die; Edward Putrgan, Auroa, leave until the January draft; Frederick Askew. Midhirst, adjourned until tho next sitting. The Hawera County Council appealed for Charles Frederick West, tar boiler, in the employ of the Council. Adjourned to ena.blo the evidence of the engineer to be heard.
John Henry Eddington Melville, farmer, Kaponga. who appealed on the of public interest and undue j hardship, stated that ho was 20 years of age and single. He was milking 4G cows by hand. He desired t&nporary exemption to enable him to get the cropping through, aa<l also to assist his neighbors. The work would he finished by the end of February. Leave was granted until the February CI draft. William Rea, factory hand, Te Roti, married with two children, applied for leave until February on account of his wife's health. Appellant produced medical certificate in support of his statement. Leave was granted until the March draft. Frank Tecofsky, farmer, Xg'aere, appealed on the ground of undue iiardi slhip. The appeal was adjourned sine die. ! Walter George Tucker, farmer, Midhirst. who appealed on the frouud of public interest and undue hardship, said he was married with two children. FTe held a l.i.p. farm of 120 acres, on whidh ho was milking by machines 30 cows. Appellant and his wife worked the farm. To Captain Walker: Ho had had the farm for five years, and had been working on it continuously. , The appeal was adjourned until the next sitting for further information. Walter Viekers, farmer, Midliirat (Mr Stanford) appealed on tlie ground of public interest and undue hardship. Appellant said ilie was married with three children. His farm consisted of 202 acres, which he had owned for 13 or 14 years. 'Ho had 00 cows, milked by hand; half of the herd were pedigree Jerseys. Further hearing was adjourned until the first draft of Class D was called up. Ernest Mantle, farmer, Tahora, for whom Mr O'Dea appeared, appealed on the ground of undue hardship. Decision was reserved sine die on the usual conditions, with an additional stipulation that appellant is to report wihen his brother returns from the front. The appeal of Albert Edward Bi'vgess, bootmaker, Stratford, was dismissed, there being no appearance of the reservist. Job Samuel Bloxham, dairy farmer, MidLirst, appealed for hia son, Thomas Bloxham, farm assistant. He deposed that he was a widower, and was milking 20 cows by machine on a freehold farm of 70 acres. The reservist did most of the work on the farm. He Iliad one son at the front. I'he reservist , was single. Appellant was in poor health, and was not able to do a, great deal of work. Decision was reserved. William John Walsh, dairy farmer, Midhirst, appealed on the ground of public-interest and undue hardship. Captain Walker stated that the reservist had' previously volunteered, and had been turned down- no fewer than four' time.s,. being finally passed by the Special C2 Board. He thought this ■vras a, case- in which the reservist might be granted leave- \mtil the March draft. "Leave was granted until the March draft.
