Mr. R. Day, inspector for the Borough of New Plymouth, left yesterday for Auckland on holiday leave-

Mrs E. A. Mathews, of Omata, has received cabled advice that her son, Sergeant Wm. Mathews, was wounded in the right elbow on October 4th and admitted to a hospital in France. Mr. W. N. Ewing has received advice that his son, Lieutenant K- S. Ewing, who is returning from the front, will arrive in New Plymouth early next week.

The Fitzroy School Committee, at its meeting on Monday night, decided to send congratulations to Mr. S. G. Smith, chairman of the School Committee's Association, on his election as a member of Parliament.

At the meeting on Monday night, the Fitzroy School Committee decided to send letters of sympathy to Mrs. H. J, 11. Okey on iaccount of the death of Mr. Okev, and to Mrs. J. Purdie and family on account of the death of Private J. Purdie.

The death is announcsd of Miss Barbara (Forbes, at Hawera last week, after a short illness. The deceased lady was a resident of Normanbj. She was a woman of genuine Christian character, and her life was spent in helping others, her self-sacrifice and her devotion to all in trouble being_ proverbial amongst her circle of friends.

Mr. J. G. W. Mi.C., Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand, who is at present visiting New Plymouth, and gave an address at St. Andrew's Church last night, is the first layman to occupy ,the Moderator's chair in New Zealand, and the first layman to be elected to the position in any part of the world for-aevera^tmtejSSyeaiß.
