SOCIAL ITEMS. . AFTERNOON TEAS, Last Friday Mrs. F. G. Evans gave a very enjoyable afternoon tea, as a farewell to Mrs. Dennis Hursthouse. Musical and vocal items were given by Misses M. Humphries, C. Lea'ham, while the hostess rendered two recitations in her usual charming manner. Mrs. Evans, received her guests iu a saxe blue shantung costume, deftly finished with silk lace; Mrs. Hursthouse wore a dainty nattier blue crepe de chine costume, with hat to correspond. Amongst those present were Mesdames E. Griffiths, Slndden, Courtney, N. King, S. Allen, Mortimer Jones, Dodgshun, Chaney (senr.), Bluni dell, and Misses Humphries (2), Banwell, C. | Leatbam, Blundell, Wade, Percy-Smith. Mrs. D. K. Morrison and Miss Banwell also acted as hostesses to small social functions in j honour of Mrs. Hursthouse* during the past' week.
PERSONAL Miss Tansley (Fitzroy) has gone on a visit to Fozton. Mrs. Dennis Hursthouse, who has been the guest of Miss Percy-Smith for the last few days, left for Wanganul on Friday, en route to Wellington. Mrs. Kineton-Parkes (secretary of the Women's Emergency Corps, London) is the guest of Mrs. C. H. Burgess (Mayoress) during her short slay in New Plymouth. Sirs. Allen Waters left for Featherston on Friday by the mall train. Colonel and Mrs. D. S. Wjlle are at present in New Plymouth, staying at the White Hart Hotel. Miss B. Matthews, who has been on a lengthy visit to Taihape and Wanganul, returns to New P|ymouth on Monday next. ' Lieutenant-Colonel and Mrs. Claude Weston returned to New Plymouth on Wednesday last. Miss B. Crooke, who has been on a visit to Marlon, has returned. Mrs. C. H. Baker has returned from her short visit to Eitham. Mrs. Buckeridge (Eitham) is the guest of Mrs. T. G. Thomson, Wallace Place. Captain and Mrs. Elliot King left on Thursday for Auckland, prior to the former's return to Egypt. Mrs. Fairburn (Wanganul) is on a visit to New Plymouth. Amongst the visitors staying at Chatsworth during this week were: Mrs. Turner (Tongaporutu), Mrs. Wilson (Waitara), Mrs. and Miss Best (Eitham), Mrs. Kineton-Parkes (Dunedin), Mrs. Arthur (Hawera), Mrs. Fairburn (Wanganul), Mrs. Miss Horrocks (Eitham), Mrs. D. McLaren (Wellington). Mrs. N. K. McDiarmid left on Tuesday for Hamilton, where she will be the guest of Mrs. Campbell McDiarmid. Mrs. R. Cock is visiting her daughter (Mrs. Alec Williams, Palmerston North). Mrs. Stanley Shaw has returned from a short visit to Wellington. An engagement of interest, just announced, Is that of Lieutenant Hector Bruce Mackenzie to Miss Elyn Nicholls, of BldefoTd. The former, a young doctor, serving with the N.Z.M.C., Is a son of Sir Tbos. Mackenzie (Hic h mlssioner for New Zealand). Miss hlcuolls is a daughter of the late Mr. G. J. Bfcholls, LL.B., A judge of the Indian Civil Service.
