ON THE SEA.
SINKING OF JAPANESE LINER. IMPOSSIBLE TO LAUNCH BOATS. Received Oct 11, 7.40 p.m. London, Oct. 10. The Hirano Maru was torpedoed at daybreak. There were 320 aboard, of which 200 were passengers, including women and children. There are 28 survivors, comprising eleven passengers and 17 of the crew, who were, rescued by an American naval vessel and landed at an Irish port.
There was a strong gale and a high sea when the vessel was torpedoed, so it was impossible to launch the boats, a 9 she sank quickly, leaving the sea a mass of struggling humanity, the majority being soon overcome by the raging sea. The survivors, being thinly clad, mostly in night attire, suffered terribly from exposure. The third officer died after he was rescued. Captain Fraser went down with the vessel, the only officer saved being the chief engineer.—Times Service. MORE VESSELS SUNK. A SINKING SHIP SHELLED. Received Oct. 11,10.45 p.m. Ottawa, Oct. 11. The Leinster was twice struck. There were COO persons aboard, and only 200 were saved. Received Oct. 11, 7.45 p.m. Ottawa. Oct. 11. The New York Tunes correspondent at a British port states that the Leinster was torpedoed and sunk. It is believed that 320 persons perished.—Aus. Cable Assoc. News from an Atlantic port states that the crew of a British freighter reported that a U-boat had sunk the British steamers City of Glasgow and Mesaba, off the Irish coast, and that Captain clark and 23 members of the crew of the City of Glasgow had perished. A British vessel landed at an American port twenty survivors from the Am. erican ship Ticonderoga, which was shelled, torpedoed and sunk in mid-Atlantic by a U-boat. It is ueard that 230 perished. The U-boat shelled the sinking ship while the crew were attempting to lower the rafts and boats.—Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assoc.
HEAVY LOSS OF LIFE. Received Oct. 12, 1.15 a.m. London, Oct. 11. The Leiniter wag on a voyage from Dublin to Holyhead, and when trying to reach port was again torpedoed. There are 480 missing, 200 being saved.—Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoc..
