THE EGMONT SEAT.

MR. FITZHERBERT AND MR. WILKINSON, M.P. The iollowing telegram Avas sent by Mr. C.A. Wilkinson, M.P. for Egmont, to Mr. P. Fitsiherbisrt yesterday"Daily News' report of your remarks re contesting Egmont seat against me next election reajl with interest. Permit me to say I am more than agreeable for an early contest, and will be delighted to iiioi?t your or any other opponent, especially as an early election will give electors an opportunity of dealing"- vith the uigent question of reform in connection with the liquor trade" Mr. Fitzherbert replied as follows: "Many thanks for your telegram. Unfortunately, the News' paragraph is entirely misleading, not giving the sequence. The truth is that I "was keeping the crowd amused wh.le Mr. Smith was missing, and my words were expressed jestingly, and evidently the crowd agreed that you were fair'game. Belie\e me that I have the greatest regard and good-will towards you. and when, if ever, I seek a seat iii Parliament, I shall pick something easier than an attack on your stronghold. New Plymouth people, including self, like yon, and sincerely hope that you and Mr. Smith, M.P., will work in harmony for the advancement of Taranaki."
