MILITARY SERVICE BOARD.

YESTERDAY'S SITTING, The First v/ellington Military Service Board continued its silting yesterday in Xew Plymouth at the Soldiers' Club. Mr D. G. A. Cooper, S.M. (chairman) presided, and the other members were: _ Messrs D. McLaren and R, Graco. Captain AValker represented the Defence Department., RETURN OF A SOLDIER. Mrs Alice Martin gave evidence in the appeal of her husband, Driver Percy 0. Martin, to be returned to New Zealand. He Jiad been on service since February, 1917 and was now in Egypt. The position was that the lease of Driver Mar-, tin's property had fallen in, and he desired to come back to make fresh arrangements in connection. Tlie iirst Sub-leasing of the property hud been arranged by appellant's solicitor when he went away. Captain Walker suggested that the solicitor, as attorney, should be able to re-lcase the property. The Board declined to make a recommendation. MILK VENDOR'S APPEAL. Jens Peter Berntsen, milk vendor, Waitara, in reply to Mr A. H. Johnstone, said there had been no change in his position since lie was before the Board in July last. In reply to Captain Walker, he said he had sold 13 acres of his farm, and had given up vending and was selling milk wholesale. The members of the Board expressed surprise that the appellant should state there was no change in his position, and Mr. McLaren reminded him of the oath he had taken. In further answers to the chairman it came out that appellant had also sold several of his cows. Captain Walker drew attention to the grounds of the appeal, which were that appellant was the only milk vendor in Waitara awl that he was unable to dispose of his milk run. The appeal was dismissed, .with leave ui.til the January draft. Mr Johnstone explained that nothing had been said to liim by appellant as to his changed condition. He did not act as solicitor for appellant except in the matter of his military appeal. The chairman said it was quite clear that Mr Johnstons had been left in the dark and the Board were sure that if the changed circumstances had been communicated to him (Mr Johnstone) he would have brought them before the Board.

The appeals of Joseph C. Lobb, iarmer, Westown, and Olive E. Honeyfield, farmer, New Plymouth, were formerly dismissed, reservists having been classed C2 by the medical board. ADJOURNED APPEALS. The following appeals were adjourned:—Arthur Ernest Walsh, plumber, Rahotu, till January; George Wm. Stritton. farmer, Okau, till December; Wm. H. Tippins, farmer, Miro; Richard John Nicholls, farmer, Uruti; Ernest A. George, cordial manufacturer, Waitara; Sydney D. George, plumber, Waitara; Alphonso Wood, farmer, Omata; Howard Barnitt, dairy factory manager, Omata. Decision in the case of Lawrence Wells dairy farmer, Pimiho, was reserved until the hearing of an appeal by his brother-in-law to-day, with whom he works in partnership. SINE DIE ADJOURNMENTS. Decision was reserved sine die in the following cases:—John Ambrose Heskett, metallurgist, New Plymouth; Sydney Septimus Wells, farmer, Puniho; Francis Hearn Mills, farmer, Matau; Sydney E. Sartin, former, Huirangi; Arthur McKeown, farmer, Okoke; Noble A. Jamicson, marine engineer, Waitara. The Board adjourned till 10 a.m. today.

HAWERA SITTING. The First Wellington Military Service Board resumed its sitting in Hawera on Tuesday. The Board gave its reserved decisions in the following appeals heard on luesday:—C. K. West, Kaponga, further hearin" adjourned until the first draft of Class D is called up; S. Thompson, Stratford, reserved sine die; Truby King Stratford, leave until the January 'draft; W. W. Nicholas, Hawera, leave until the March draft; A. L. McEwen, Hawera, adjourned until the December sitting; L. Ayers, Inglewood, adjourned until after the New Plymouth sitting. The appeal of Edward Walter Hodder, farm manager, Tututawa, was formerly dismissed, appellant having been medically boarded C2, as was of Frederick George Adlam, -farmer, Norniauby, there being no appearance of the appellant. The appeal of James Collinß Latham, farmer, Tuna, was withdrawn. . The adjourned appeal of Edwin Arthur Langley, farmer, Inglewood, was reviewed. Decision was reserved. The appeal of Michael Joseph Lynskey farmer, Manaia, which was previously befere the Board, was farther considered. Decision was reserved. David Edwards, farmer, Okaiawa (Mr O'Dea) applied for leave until February or March to enable him to get ins hay in. Leave granted until the Bebruary draft. „ T „ . The adjourned case of James Parish, farmer, Tariki, was again reviewed He was still the only man on the farm. Decision was reserved. Mr O'Dea appeared for Ernest Bamford farmer, Hawera, whose case was previously before the Board. He had been unable to dispose -of the place. Decision reserved. George Jensen, farmer, Matau, who appealed on the ground of public interest, deposed that he was a married man with thrfc children. He was a olieep farmer, and held 12fi0 acres o.r.p. It was mostly bush .country, about 301) acres being cleared. There were 350 hoggets running on the place, together with a few dairy cows. He had no labor on the farm. He had one brother oil active service;. He was also looking after a 500-adre farm for another man, who, was managing a place in the South Island. Appellant had had his own place for about 12 years. William John Bourke, farmer, Alton, had his appeal furtfher adjourned until after the, 'appeal of his brother Andrew was heard, The appeal of Samuel Joseph Hodge, engineer, was dismissed, there being no appearance of the appellant. ( The Mangatoki Dairy Company, which was represented by Mr Jacob Marx, chairman of directors, appealed for its branch manager {Artlliur Ernest Cooper) at Mahoe. Decision reserved sine die. '• The adjourned appeal' of Walter Standish, farmer, Hawera, was further reviewed. Appellant said there was no change in his position. Decision reserved. Mr Powell, appeared for Thomas Cyril Cameron Simson, farmer, Whenualcura, whose case was previously before, the Board. Leave granted until the February- draft. The appeal of Samuel Joseph Hodge, engineer, Patea, wftich was dismissed in default of appearance, was reinstated when" Mr E. S. Thompson, engineer to the Patea Harbor Board, was present, and informed the Board of the steps taken to replace Hodge, who was the Board's dredge engineer. So far the Board had not been successful in replacing the appellant, but they were against any further extension of time. The Board decided to adjourn the further hearing until December, to see how the Harbor Board got on when it called ffr fresh applications for the position. The Board subsequently gave its reserved decision in the following v cases: —E. A. Langley, Inglewood, decision reserved sine die; M. J. Lynskey, Manaia, lefive until January draft; J.
