A London cable states that at a byelection Sir Newton James Moore was returned unopposed. A London wire states that the Australian and New Zealand press delegates have started for home. Mrs. J. Phelan, Lepperton,' has received word that her adopted son, A. J. 11. Griffin, was killed in action on September 16. In a new list of honors conferred 'by l'.h Majesty the King under the Order of the British Empire, Mrs- Jane Duthie Crooke, New Plymouth, wife of Mir. A. Crooke, S.M., is awarded the fifth class, or Member of the Order. Mr. I/id Mrs. John Copestake, of Tarurutangi, have received word that tlieir youngest son, Trooper Leslie Copestake, who left with the 31st Mounted Rifles, died of wounds in Palestine on September 23. Mrs. Hugh Gunn, of Edgecombe Street, New Plymouth, has received advice that her son, Corporal Harold Gunn, was admittted to hospital in England on October 1, suffering from contused legs, as the result of burial by explosion. Corporal Gunn left with the 9th Reinforcements. 'Mr. J. R. Hill left r oy the mail train on Saturday for Auckland to meet his 'son, Private Nelson A. Hill, who is returning with a draft invalided. Private Hill, who left with the 11th Reinforcements, was severely wounded two yeaTS ago, both leg 3 being injured, and so severely that one had to'lbe amputated.

Mrs. A. Burrows, -Rowan Road, Kaponga, has received tlie sad news of the death of her brother, Private Walter Richards, who left with the 30th '.Reinforcements, joining at Te Kuiti. His father was a Maori War veteran, having taken part in the battle of Waireka, and his brother George (13th Reinforcements) was recently wounded.

Mrs. R. L. Cooper, jif Powderham Street, received word on Saturday thai her brother, Lieutenant H. B. Pattrick, had been awarded the Military Cross. Lieutenant Pattrick was wounded last year in a raid the day before the Battle of Messines, and rejoined his unit only a few weeks ago, having been engaged in instructional work in the Rife Brigß.de camp at Stafford, England, for the past 13 months. -

Three more invalided soldiers well known in Eltbam and district are announced to arrive shortly. They are: A. D. Murray, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. U. Murray; Les. Theobald, son of Mrs. J. T. Theobald, and formerly on the staff oi Messrs Syme and Weir; and H. McLaughlin, son' of Mr. and Mrs. H. McLaughlin, of Rawhitiroa. All are men who have seen long service, and will be heartily welcomed. —Star. The Moa Road ißoard, at its meeting on Saturday, passed a resolution expressing appreciation of the service rendered by the late Mr. H. J. Okey, M.P.>the district, and also sympathy with Mw. Okey and family- The chairman, m moving the resolution, which was neeended by Mr. Hunter, stated that, as chairman of the board, he had had _ to meet Mr. Okey on various matters. Mr. Okey was always easy to approach and always pleased to give every assistance to anything that Would benefit the district Mr. Todd added this tribute.

Miss Sybil Nathan's name appears in the latest list of those war workers upon whom His Majesty the King has ' been plealed to confer .the honor d Member of the Order of the British Empire. This is the fifth class of merit, and entitles the person thus honored to the letters M.B.E. after his or her name. Miss Nathan is ton secretary of the Women's Cpmmittee of the British Bed Cross Society in Wellington and has heen a most zealous and untiring worker, her tact and kind courtesy having heen at the service of all the sub-centres who have applied foi help or information, and Red Cross workers throughout the Wellington military area will all feci tliat tli& award has heen richly merited.
