DISTRICT NEWS.
CARDIFF. (From Our Own Correspondent.)' On Tuesday, October 1, the new Cardiff factory started receiving the suppliers' milk. Although considerable work has yet to be done ere the factory is completed the manufacturing rooms and machinery are available. At all events the manager (Mr. Don. Cameron) will do his best to carry on under the present difflclties, and it may be a week or two before everything is in running order. Owing to the extraordinarily bad weather, the contractors were severely handicapped with the work, so that instead of the farmers having to cart their milk I further afield for the anticipated few (weeks, they have had to do so for over two months. However, this inconvenience has passed, and from the solid and capacious appearance of the new building it may not occur again for a lifetime.
In common with the rest of Taranaki, Cardiff has met with severe losses in stock, and owing to the tardy, growth of grass it may be well on to December before the cattle regain their condition or come up to the ordinary milk yield. At present the grass seems to be coming away nicely after this week's warm rain, so perhaps the cows will be able to obtain sufficient feed for the remainder of the season.
Mr. Fred Crossley, who for many years has been one of the most useful men pf the district, has finally migrated with his family to another district. It iis hoped that they will prosper in their new home. Mr. A. Atkinson, recently .drawn in the ballot, has also left the district, having exchanged farms with an Eltham resident.
Private Tom Carley, an old Cardiff boy, who enlisted some two years ago, has been invalided home from the front, and will arrive home on the 11th instant.
and will arrive home on the 11th instant.
It is pleasing to note that both the sons of Mr. G. W. Rogers, who were recently mentioned in the casualty lists, are progressing favorably. The recent inspector's annual examination reports that the efficiency of the Cardiff School has considerably improved, notwithstanding the unusual amount of lost time during the year.
