CONCILIATION COUNCIL.

HOTEL EMPLOYEES' DISPUTE. The Conciliation Court opened a sitting in JTew Plymouth yesterday in connection with the hotel employees' dispute. Mr- T. Harle Giles, Commissioner, presided, and the assessors were: For the employers, Messrs W. P. Ki/kwood, E. Whittle, and H. S. Brookman; for the union, Messrs A. Jackson and PWalsh (of Auckland) and P. J Lyons. The Jonuaissioner explained that this was a re-opened dispute of the Taranaki hotel employees it would be remembered that in May last the council sat in New Plymouth and HaweTa in connection with the dispute. Since then a friendly settlement had been'arrived at practically throughout the whole DoI minion in the hotel employees' disputes, and, with that knowledge, he felt that it would 'be a very extraordinary thing if Taranaki alone stood out from arriving at a friendly understanding with its workers. For that reason, he had communicated with the employers, stating that whilst he was down here he hoped it would be possible to have a I sitting of the council and endeavor to adjust matters in dispute in a friejuily |way, based on the lines of the country hotel award. His suggestion had been readily accepted, and he tendered his thanks to both sides for having so responded. He felt it was the proper thing to do, feeling satisfied that it was advisable that disputes of this par'ticnlar kind should be settled between the workers and the employers. There was nothing to be gained by either side having scraps in the Arbitration Court, or fighting these thinjs to the bitter end. It never had been done by ;the trade in TnTanaki so long as he had ■ \>*en Commissioner, and he djd not want ' to *ee it now-

The council then proceeded to discuss the country hotels' award, clause by clause.

The Commissioner reports that, after deliberations! a settlement is in view. The terms and conditions will he laid before a sitting of the council this mnrninjj, and it is most likely that all parties will come to an agreement.
