BRITISH AIR RAIDS. - PAUSE WIDESPREAD TERROR, Received Sept. 3, 7.50 p.m. London, Oct. 2. The Press Bureau reports that a neutral, who has returned from Germany, states that there is widespread terror on the Rhine, owing to the British raids. The central portion of the Frankfort-on-Main station was bo damaged that trains were unable to enter, but they arrive and depart from improvised wooden platforms some distance from the station.— Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assco. and Reuter. RETURN OF GERMAN COLONIES. A VAIN DESIRE. —— j Received Oct. 3, 7.50 p.m. Amsterdam, Oct. 2. Dr. Solf, lecturing at Munich, said the national importance of the colonies could not be over-estimated. Present substitutes for raw material were insufficient for peace times. German wool requirements alone meant the products of fifty million sheep, which was practically impossible at home. Raw materials were weak point in world economy, hence the colonies must be retained to prevent commercial isolation. The policy of an open door must be one of the most important'peace demands. The Imperial Government adhered firmly to the demand for the return of the African and wrath Sea possessions, as well as fresh partitions of Africa, so as to consolidate I Germany's scattered possessions. The Berliner Tageblatt says the ViceChancellor had a conference with the Reichstag majority as regards the composition of the new Government. The representatives of the Right, also the roles and Independent Socialists, declined to participate in the coalition.—Renter

London, Oct. 2. The Daily Telegraph's Rotterdam correspondent states tii at the process of recreating the so-called Government of National Defence has begun at Berlin with negotiations with Ton Peyer and various party leaders. The main efforts of the existing rulers are concentrated on the mobilising of the Socialists, with a view to present to the world a picture of a new Germany clothed in the white sheet of democracy. In the meantime all is confusion. The Government yesterday indefinitely adjourned the Main Committee of the Reichstag. The Independent Socialists vainly protested against gagging operations and made a stormy demonstration. Eventually the chairman, amid wild turmoil, closed the sitting. The Pan-Germans declare that all is lost
