The Taranaki hotel employees' dispute will lie heard before the Conciliation Council this morning at 11.1C, at the County Council Chambers. The High Commissioner, replying to the Minister of Marine regarding the war risks of sailors, states that the British compensation scheme applies to all British ships engaged in the New Zealand coastal trade.—Press Association. Writes a former member of Taranaki News staff, under date London, August 13: "Good news from Prance is about the only thing we speak and think of these days. There is a good lot of fighting ahead yet, I think, but it is very cheerful now."
An ex Taranaki resident, writing from Australia, says that Australia is envious of New Zealand in more than one way. The Imperial Government is making New Zealand's path easy. Australia has to paddle her own canoe. New Zealand has conscription; Australia lias not, which makes all the difference, says the writer. A collection taken up on behalf of the band at the demonstration on Tuesday afternoon, in front of the Soldiers' Club, netted the satisfactory sum of £lO 9s. Mr. H. 8. Brookman initiated the collection, and donated £5, and Mr. K. Cock offered to reimburse any of the bandsmen who were "losing time" by attending the demonstration. In consequence of some disputes between the captain and members of the crew of the schooner Ottillie Fjord, which is at the breakwater waiting to depart on her return voyage, something in the nature of wholesale arrests were effected yesterday afternoon. Warrants were taken out by the captain, and four seamen, found in various places about town, wei-e lodged in the police cells, and will appear before the magistrate this morning., SeveralchanjeswilMi^jj^mjed some striking dramatic situations. The final story of that book—that of the defaulting presidents of the republic—has been taken as the main theme of the splendid picture, "An American Live Wire" which, with Earle Williams and Grace Dannond in the chief characters, shows at- the Empire to-night.
