TARANAKI BY-ELECTION.

ACTING LIBERAL LEADER'S APPEAL j The following statement i,i. made by the Hon. W. D. S. Macdonald, Acting Leader of the Liberal Party: "In connection with the forthcoming election, it will be remembered that a compact was made between the parties who came together to form the National Government. Under that compact Mr. Connett is the National Government candidate. I ask all electors in Taranaki who have been supporters of the Liberal section of the National Government to go to the polling booth on Thursday, the 10th instant, without fail, and to record their votes in favor of Mr. Connett. Without a combination of the two parties which were in existence when the war broke out, it is to me inconceivable that New Zea.land could have dona its duty to the Empire in this time of trial The great news received this morning brings a silver lining to the dark clouds, and encourages the belief that wo can now see the beginning of the en.i. The return of the supporter of the National Government will indicate the loyalty of Taranaki, and the determination of

the electors to do all they can to assist in bringing about a satisfactory conclusion of the war."
