GENERAL ALLENBY.
A NOTED CAVALRY OFFICER. General Sir E. 11. H. Allenby succeeded General Sir Archibald Murray in June, 1917, shortly after the double failure of General Murray to capture Gaza. Previously lie had commanded the Third Army in France. In the years immediately before the war ha Inspector of Cavalry, and as such.' was responsibly for the shaping of the regiments which fought at Le Cateau and several times saved the infantry of Field-Marshal Foch's force from envelopment by the Germans during the enemy's invading movement in France in 1014. During the battle of the Somroe his troops played a defensive part, but they had a brilliant share in the battle of Arras, in April, 1917. Hi? task was the capture of the southern part of the Vimy Ridge, and the German positions east of Arras and further south, wliile General Home operated to the north against the main part of the Vimy Ridge, By this operation the Third Army breached the northern end of the Hindenburg line, and in the first phase of the battle captured eight thousand prisoners and 150 guns. General. Allenby's career in Palestine has been one of unbroken success from the first. He captured the Gaza positions which had witlistojfljj, General Murray, by a masterly battlggof manoeuvres, and swept north of Jerusaleum, which was captured early last December. His last success, one of the most notable victories of the whole war, is an extraordinary example of cavalry operations. General Allenby is 57 years of age, and lias a record of active service in South Africa.
