Mr Connett is the nominee of the National Government. He is at present chairman of the Taranaki County Council, a member of the New Plymouth Harbor Board, and President of the Taranaki A. and P. Society. He is a son of Mr J." B. Connett, now of Te Henui.
Mr Smith has resigned his position in the public service in order to contest the seat, and is standing as a progressive democrat. He is a member of the Taranaki Education Board and the Board of Governors of the New Plymouth High Schools. He is also chairman of the Taranaki School Committee's Association. He is a son of the lat Mr E. M. Smith, who represented Taranaki at the time of his death.
