IMPORTANT JUDGMENT. Melbourne, 'Sept. 28. A remarkable High Court judgment affecting Mr Justice Higgins' award was given in the ease brought by the Waterside Workers' Federation against a Sydney firm for alleged breach of award. In this the Court found that the constitution of the Court of Conciliation and Arbitration was not beyond the powers of Parliament regarding its arbitral provisions, but was as regard enforcing the provisions. The award was not invalid owing to the appointment of the President for seven years, but the award was not enforcable by the said Court.—Aub.N.Z. Cable Assoc. PRICE OF BEER RAISED. Sydney, Sept. 2S. The Brewers' Association lias increased the price of bottled beer Id per bottle. SHIPBUILDING A WAR INDUSTRY Melbourne, Sept. 28.8 Mr. Poynton, in a speech, said a Bill would shortly be introduced to declare shipbuilding a war work and remove it from the scope of the Arbitration Court.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assoc. SOLDIERS UNDER CIVIL LAW. Melbourne, Sept. 28. The Senate proposes to amend the Defence Act to bring soldiers on active service into conformity with civil law respecting the commission of the capital offence of murder. SEAMEN IN THE WAR ZONE. Melbourne, Sept. 28. Mr Poynton lias announced that seamen engaged in vessels registered in the Commonwealth requisitioned for service in the war zone will receive a bonus equal to 25 per cent of their monthly pay, to be retrospective to September I.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. CLAIM AGAINST D'ARCY'S ESTATE. Received Sept. 29, 5.5 p.m. Sydney, Sept. 29. Mr. McLaughlin, a solicitor, obtained a verdict for £B2 qigainst the estate of the late I.es D'Arcy, the boxer, for expenses connected with his visit to Melbourne on D'Are.y's behalf, with a view to securing regular permission for lrim to proceed to America on a boxing tour. In the meantime, D'Arcy, who was just on the recruiting age, departed for America surreptitiously. The defence pleaded that (D'Arcy was a minor.— Aus.-N Z. Cable Assoc.
