DECEIVING GOVERNMENT STATISTICIAN.

By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dannevirke, Sept. 27. A somewhat unusual ease was heard before Mr Dyer, S.M., in which Sydney W. Mead was' charged with having wilfully deceived the Government Statistician respecting his number of children. Mead first, gave. the number of his children as three and subsequently four. Investigations elicited the fact that ha had three legitimate'and ose illegitimate child. The last-named defendant alleged had been taken by his wifo to be brought up as the twin-brother of her lastborn child, tooth, legitimate and illegitimate having arrived about the same time. Defendant, however, was not supporting his wife asd three legitimate children, and was now living with another woman.

He has now been put into Class A of the Second Division. Ho contended that he acted in all good faith, being of opinion that the illegitimate child had beer; legally adopted. He .was fined £lO or two months' imprisonment. The magistrate informed defendant that he was living like a beast.
