COSSACKS DEFEAT BOLSHEVIKS. BOLSHEVIKS DRIVEN FROM NORTHWEST CAUCASUS. Received Sept. 28, 1245 a.m. London, Sept. 26. The whole of the north-eastern Caucasus is now in the hands of the Cossacks, except Vladikavkas, while the Kuban Cossacks have driven the Bolsheviks out of the greater part of the north-west Caucasus. Tho Bolsheviks are using Astrakan as headquarters for contemplated operations on the trans-Caspian. The Turks have retired from their positions at Tabriz.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assoc. UP THE DWINA RIVER. BRITISH SEVERELY DEFEAT BOLSHEVIKS. GREAT ENEMY FORCE ACCUMULATING. Received Sept. 27, 7.40 p.m. London, Sept. 26. It is announced that General Poole has considerably advanced up the Dwina river, and cleared both sides for fifty miles south of Berenitskaia, severely defeating the Bolsheviks and sinking four ships.
The situation of the Czechs on the Volga front continues serious, A considerable enemy force is operating in the direction of Krasniufimsk, which the Czechs hold. The Bolsheviks are constantly reinforced by Germans. The new Bolshevik army is ultimately to consist of half a million, whom Germany is actively engaged in instructing. The majority of the Bolshevik forces are comparatively worthless, while of the two-thirds peasantry about half are workmen. The whole of the bourgeoisie is intensely hostile to Bolshevik rule. Many workers on the Volga tried to join the Czechs, but the Bolsheviks prevented them.—Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoc. BREST LITOVSK TREATY DENOUNCED. Received Sept. 27, 7.40 p.m. j New York, Sept. 20. Tie New York Times' Washington correspondent states that the Russian Embassy has received official despatches from Ufa that a provisional Russian Government has been formed.
