STRATFORD.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) [All communications, letters, etc., left with Mr H. J. Hopliins, bookseller, will receive prompt attention.] KETURNfcD SOLDIERS' BALL. Stratford, Sept. 27. Everything pointed to a successful conclusion, and the financial side should prove very satisfactory to the promoter* of the returned soldiers' ball, held in the Town Hall last evening. The attendance of the public was splendid, the floor being crowded ai times. The costumes worn were very elaborate, and the wearing of masks heightened the effect. A Mangatoki lady won the first prize for gentlemen's costume, appearing as a fisherman, in oilskin, sou'-wester, and gumboots, and the Mayor, in making the award, could not give the winner's name. Miss Walsh annexed the second trophy for gentlemen, looking very attractive as a "jockey" For the ladies, Mrs- Gorton scored a good win in a costume representing 'Tlags of All Nations," and Miss Eeid (Eltham) was awarded second honors with a costume '•France and England." The floor was in excellent order, and the music by Mrs. Eianchi quite fulfilled expectations, and merited the unstinted praise given. The orchestra, comprised Mrs. Bianehi (piano), Messrs Parker and Foley (cornets), George (violin), J. McAllister i double bass), Wilson (trombone), J. S. Rowe (drum and bells).' The duties of M.'C. were in the hjn-ls of all returned soldiers—Messrs B. Rickleben, J. Bennett, P. Clemow, W. Harris, N. Nielsen, and L. Cramer. The supper arrangements reflected the greatest credit j on the ladies, who had no light task in their voluntary labor The secretary (Mr T. .T. Sheahan) merits a word for the amount of work he has accomplished in securing ouch a satisfactory result. The financial results will not be available for a few days, but it is anticipated the Copper Trail will receive a lift along as a result of the ball GENERAL.

K. .Tames made no mistake; he was giving the best possible value for the money. There is yet time to he one of the fornnate, and. whilst there, inquire about, those pictures he has.
