STRATFORD A WINS THE TOURNAMENT. A high wind prevailed for the seven-a-side tournament held at Stratford yesterday altei-noon. The attendance of th." public was very good. Under Condi'ctur L. Spurdle.'the Stratford Band enlivened the proceeedings with several selections and marches that were appro, eiated by all present. The Ladies' Patriotic Committee were in attendance with tea and light refreshments. Apart from the high winds, the play was always interesting. In the first round, Stratford A defeated Technical College, Fryday scoring a try, which was not converted —the only score. Stratford D-H. School then met Midlirst. and play went the fall time without a acore. It was resolved to play a little longer, and Midhirst lost by a farce-down. The third contest was between Rovers and Stratford B. Play was very even in tho first spell, Stratford, with a strong breeze, failing to, score. In the second half they lost Hampson, but won the game, Butchel notching a fine try, which was the only score. Owins to Opunake not arriving, Rovers had a bye, and were brought in the second round, being pitted against the Stratford School Tho latter brought off a surprise by scoring two tries to pil, Conncll and Tristram scoring. Stratford 4. met the B's in the semifinal. This was expected to be a good "nntest, but the A's never looked like losing. N. Kivell and Fryday scored, Kivell converting in each instance. For the final the teams were:—Stratford A and High School. Kivell scored a try soon after play opened, but it wa3 not till late in the second spell that Berg go* across the line, the A team thus winning the tournament (and gold medals) by 6 pnint3 to nil. Messrs J. H. Thompson and J. Thomas were referees, Mr. TJ. Oood official timekeeper, and Mr- F. S. Rowe (megaphone) announced the teams.
