EDUCATION CONFERENCE.

Christchurcli, Sept. 23. .At the Education Conference, Dr. Chilton, of the Professorial Be rd, presented a paper on "The Modern University," dealing briefly with the history of the university institutions and dealing with teaching methods. Dr. Chilton suggested that lectures he typewritten, duplicated, and distributed to the students before hand, so that the lecture hour could be devoted to answering questions and explaining difficulties. In the discussion it was stated that small staffing militated not only against research work, but against extension classes. The conference resolved that the Government be asked to give a grant to university colleges to put the Workers' Educational Association tutorial classes on a more satisfactory basis, that flic Department be asked to institute a Dominion grading scheme for all manual instructors, so that they may be paid in the same manner as teachers in primorv schools. ..
