DISTRICT NEWS.

MIDHIRST. (From Our Own Correspondent.) As anticipated there was a big crowd at the Hall on the night of the 20th inst, when the school concert and dance was held. The items of the programme given by the school children were excellent throughout and reflect much credit on the trouble and care bestowed on the training by Mr Mail and his staff, the Misses Finnerty and Mounford and Mr J. Hall. The mounting, grouping and dresses in several of the choruses were most artistic. The item "Some hearts will be Joyful," was particularly well rendered and nigger dances and chorus "Under loo" by the boys was also very good and received with much applause. Amongst the adult performers who assisted with the programme were Mr Foley, whose clever and witty ventriloquism is always enjoyed by both young and old. Another Stratford gentleman, Mr Vinsen, also made a. great hit with his wonderfully realistic imitations of brass band instruments, which deserve the highest praise and fairly brought down the house, he replied with an amusing recitation. Mr C. Smith, chairman of the school committee, presided, and his appeal to the larrikin element at the back not to make it too hot was respected throughout. The Misses Anderson. Huse and Mountford played the accompaniments and the concert was followed by a dance which concluded a most successful evening. The programme of the concert was as follows: Overture Miss Anderson; action song, School Children; recitation, "Mice and Cheese," children; ventriloquism, Mr Foley; pianoforte drill," girls; musical item, Mr Vinsen; recitation, nursery rhyme tend, children; recitation, When Granny was a Little Girl, girts; sort?;, Mrs Tinnell; song, Miss Fever; song, Mr Hamilton, fhorus, "Some Hearts will be Joyful"; song Mis 3 Martin, nigger song and dance, "I.mdcr Loo," boys; God Save the King.
