FEEDING THE TROOPS. AMERICA'S GREAT TASK. SHIPPING CONCENTRATED IN ATLANTIC. Received Sept. 22, 10.20 p.m. Washington, Sept. 21. Mr. Hoover, Food Controller, in a statement, says that it -will be necessary to ship 17,500,000 tons of meats, fats, breadstuffs, sugar, feed, and grains to Europe from the United States by July, 1919, to make possible the sending of an American Army of 3,500,000 to France by next summer and adequately provision the Allied nations. Mr. Hoover points out that to obtain the necessary tonnage for the transportation of food to the troops it will be necessary to withdraw Allied ships from the Australian and South American trade, transferring them for service between Europe and North America.
