THE CITIZENS' BAND.

Th& New Plymouth Citizens' Band is to be congratulated upon the possession of the very fine baridroom opened yester. day. Since the advent of t'he new con- , duetor (Mr. McLeod) the hand lias progressed in every way and become an institution that is both a credit and an asset to the town. The citizens have appreciated the work of the conductor and the band, and at all times given them cordial support, until now it can be said that at 110 time in the history of New Plymouth lias the band been so firmly established as it is to-day. Tlio band has attained a high standard of efficient}', and a gratifying feature is its readiness to help at any function and 011 any occasion. This entails, as was pointed out at the opening yesterday, not a little self-sacrifice on the part of its members, who personally profit nothing from tho performances, and it is public spirit of this commendable nature that 'has gained sucli a large measure of confidence aud support, and accounts for the band's splendid position to-day. The band, like other institutions, has been hard hit by the war, members continually dropping out; yet, through the foresight and ability of the bandmaster, the juniors fill the vacancies, wiflh no apparent deterioration in the work of tho band. The provision of a modern band-house should encourage tho band to continue tho good work it is doing fjr tho town, and we heartily congratulate the members, as well as the conductor, the president, and the chairman, to whose interest and enthusiasm the building of the new bandroom is largely due.
