SPORTING.

(By '-Moturoa.")

SHE EGMONT METING.

Yesterday's trains brought big crowds to Haw era, sportsmen coming from Auckland, Wellington, Hawko's Bay, and other centres to attend the Egniout Racing Club's spring meeting, which takes place to-day, Splendid tields will contest the various events, and provided the weather is favorable, excellent racing should be witnessed. Mr. V. Stratum and his assistants have everything in hand to ensure a successful gathering. Racing will commence at 11.30 with the Hunters' Flat Handicap, for which Flying Camp is likely to start a warm favorite.

If Paraoa is started in the Tongahoe Hack Hurdles he should render a good account of himself with 11.0. Wanganui sports will be on Zola to a man. The big Sweet Simon gelding has been jumping splendidly, and his track form has been very attractive.

The Hunt Cup Steeples should be a spectacular event. There are some very fine jumpers engaged in the race, and Tirau, Lady Renown, Kurnalpi and others have had plenty of schooling lately.

The Tawhiti Handicap has filled well, and looks very open. Hyginns, Glenroy and Coropet should strip fittest of the lot. The Ladies' Bracelet Steeples will probably see Flying Camp, Tirau, and Kurnalpi in action agaiu. If tin* lirstnamed gets round safely he should take a lot of beating. Depredation and Detroit are likely to share favoritism in the tUeßae Memorial Handicap. On recent form Detroit appears to be in the pink of condition, and this should stand to hint over the last furlong. The Waihi Handicap will see Royal Park, Glucian, Zela, etc., under silk. All are very well at present, and the public may find it hard to pick out the "correct pea." The mteting closes with the Telegraph Handicap, in which such speedy, horses as Pennon, Madam Ristori, and Ncmalinc are engaged. The Wanganui sprinter is reported to be very fit at present.

Hail and rain fell in Hawera yesterday morning, but a strong wind dried the course up thoroughly later in the day. The racing track is in sood condition, considering the wet spring experienced this year.
